Early Life and Rise to the Top

Bumrah made his first-class debut for Gujarat in the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy, taking seven wickets against Vidarbha on debut. His performances in domestic T20 cricket, including a strong showing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, caught the attention of Mumbai Indians, who signed him for the IPL. His unconventional action — a short run-up combined with a very late arm delay — made him difficult to pick early, and that same action has powered his entire career since.

He made his international debut in January 2016 against Australia in Sydney, and immediately looked at home, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the T20I leg of that tour.

Test Career

Bumrah made his Test debut in January 2018 against South Africa and quickly became India’s most feared overseas bowler. He played a defining role in India’s historic 2018–19 series win in Australia, and famously took 6 for 33 in Melbourne during that tour.

Standout Test achievements:

  • Became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 150 Test wickets, doing so in just 34 matches
  • Became the first Indian pacer to top the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings
  • Named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024, after taking 86 wickets in 21 matches across formats that calendar year at an average of 13.76 — a record among fast bowlers with that many wickets in a single year
  • Took 30 wickets in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, one of his most dominant series
  • Has served as India’s Test vice-captain since December 2023 and has captained the side on multiple occasions when Rohit Sharma was unavailable

Because of recurring back issues, Bumrah’s Test workload is now managed closely by the BCCI — for example, he played only three of five Tests on India’s 2025 tour of England by design, a plan built around keeping him fit for the long term rather than any single series.

ODI Career

Bumrah remains one of the most economical fast bowlers in ODI cricket, known for his death-overs control and yorker accuracy. He has been a key figure in India’s white-ball success, including their run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and their title-winning 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign, though injury management has occasionally kept him out of white-ball assignments, including a break around the 2025 Champions Trophy period while recovering from a back injury.

T20I Career

Bumrah was central to India’s 2024 T20 World Cup title win, finishing as joint-second highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 15 wickets, at an outstanding average of 8.26 and an economy rate of just 4.17 — numbers that earned him the Player of the Tournament award. He also played a lead role in India’s back-to-back T20 World Cup defense in 2026, returning career-best figures of 4 for 15 in the final against New Zealand and winning Player of the Match.

IPL Career with Mumbai Indians

Bumrah has spent his entire IPL career with Mumbai Indians, having been signed after impressing scouts in domestic cricket.

  • Has been MI’s primary strike bowler for over a decade
  • Played every match of IPL 2022 (14 games, 15 wickets), a workload that was later followed by a stress fracture in his back that ruled him out for nearly a year — a case study the team now points to when managing his overs
  • Reported to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for structured strength and conditioning work ahead of IPL 2026, continuing to bowl under medical supervision before rejoining Mumbai Indians for the season
