Early Life and Rise Through the Ranks

Gill grew up in Fazilka before his family moved to Mohali so he could access better cricket facilities. He represented Punjab at Under-16 level, made his List A and Ranji Trophy debuts in 2017, and was a regular under Rahul Dravid in India’s junior setup. His breakout moment came at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, where he was India’s leading run-scorer with 372 runs at an average of 124 as India lifted the title. That performance made him an instant IPL prospect, and Kolkata Knight Riders signed him later that year.

Gill made his senior India debut in January 2019 against New Zealand in Hamilton, and his 91 at the Gabba during India’s historic 2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in Australia first showed his temperament at the highest level.

Test Career

As of mid-2026, Gill has played 41 Tests, scoring 2,969 runs at an average of 43.66, with 10 centuries. He was named India’s Test captain in May 2025, succeeding Rohit Sharma, and made an immediate statement — a century in his very first Test as captain at Headingley.

Standout Test moments:

  • Scored 269 against England at Edgbaston (2025) — the highest score by an Indian Test captain, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254
  • In the same match, followed it with 161 in the second innings, becoming the first batter in history to score a double-century and a 150-plus century in both innings of a single Test
  • Became the first Asian batter to score 300-plus runs across both innings of a Test in England
  • Set the record for most runs in a debut series as India’s Test captain, surpassing Kohli’s mark

ODI Career

Gill has established himself as one of the format’s most efficient run-scorers. He has played 64 ODIs, scoring 3,191 runs at an average of 59.09, including 8 centuries.

Standout ODI records:

  • The youngest player to score an ODI double-century — 208 not out against New Zealand in 2023, at age 23
  • The fastest batter to 2,000 ODI runs in men’s cricket
  • Was India’s leading run-scorer in the 2023 ODI World Cup run to the final
  • Part of India’s title-winning squad at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy
  • Took over as India’s ODI captain in October 2025, with the BCCI citing the 2027 World Cup as the reason for building around him early

T20I Career

Gill has played international T20Is intermittently, with his best returns coming in 2023, including an unbeaten 126 off 63 balls against New Zealand — India’s highest individual T20I score at the time. He is one of only a handful of Indian batters, alongside Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Suresh Raina, to have scored centuries in all three international formats.

IPL Career with Gujarat Titans

Gill has spent his entire IPL career divided between two franchises: Kolkata Knight Riders (2018–2021) and Gujarat Titans, whom he joined in 2022.

  • Key contributor to GT’s title-winning debut season in 2022 (483 runs)
  • Won the Orange Cap in 2023 with 890 runs, the second-highest single-season aggregate in IPL history
  • Named GT captain in 2024, following Hardik Pandya’s departure
  • Retained the captaincy for IPL 2026, scoring 732 runs at a strike rate of 163.02 as GT reached the final
  • One of the batters behind IPL’s 100th century in league history, with five IPL hundreds to his own name
